Denumirea de zoisit vine după numele lui Sigmund Zois, baron de Edelstein și savant austriac care a finanțat mai multe expediții de colectare de minerale.
I se mai spune și Anyolit, de la “anyoli” care înseamnă verde în limba poporului Massai.
